According to BC, the 2010 Supra will most likely make use of a naturally-aspirated 3.7-litre V6 driving through the rear wheels (natch). Power should be around the 350 metric horsepower mark and forced-induction may very well become an option. The overall proportions are a close match with the FT-HS concept, except this time the body design reprises the wide n’ curvy haunches of the last-gen JZA80 Supra.

The front lights even replicate the lamp placement of the JZA80, and the C-pillar also echoes that of its predecessor. BC’s rendering even showcases the FTHS’s trick carbon-fibre rims, as well as its bonnet “bulge”, however one thing we’d liked to have seen carried over from the FTHS concept was its sexy rear light cluster. Instead, Best Car chose to go with some kind of Ferrari/Elise type arrangement.

Goodbye 2008, and hello 2010?

Okamoto made the comments after speaking last month about Toyota’s midterm business plan and said the company must launch more “appealing products” that are “fun to drive.” Okamoto added that the strategy will involve the “development of a new sports model.”

The presentation was accompanied by a slide show depicting a Lexus sports car along with two other sporty concept cars. One car bears the Toyota logo on the hood. After the presentation, Okamoto said there were no concrete plans.

…the new Toyota Supra would come standard with a 6 cylinder 350hp 3.5 liter and the optional (necessity if you ask me) 5.0 liter 450 horsepower V-8. This Supra would bring back the old tune of Vanilla Ice’s “Rollin’ in my 5.0” God help us, but once again us fans of true meat will have something to dig our teeth into.

Interestingly, the Supra is rumored to have been staged for a meager 4.3 liter V-8 due to a problem with the rigidity vs. power in the convertible… but rather than take the road most traveled by other car manufacturers, the Supra chose to ditch the convertible Supra V-8 all together and roll with a solid top race ready version. At last somebody is thinking with their head, err, foot!

I’d buy that for a dollar.

The converted Super GT-spec racing car did so convincingly, too. As the only GT-class car in the field, the Denso SARD Supra HV-R maintained a steady lead of several laps throughout the course of the race, and in the later hours, it essentially dialed things up a notch and ran away from the rest of the field. After starting from the pole position, the Supra completed 616 laps in the ensuing 24 hours — 19 more than the second-place finisher. The victory marks the first of its type for a hybrid-powered vehicle.

Well done, Toyota crew!

The Supra HV-R is a hybrid whose Super GT-spec 4,480cc V8 is augmented with regenerative braking, a pair of 10kW in-wheel motors up front and a 150kW motor in the rear. The engine’s output is rated at 480 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque, and the car’s weight will come in at a little over 2,300 pounds.

The Toyota FT-HS Hybrid concept car shown at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show will, in fact, be the next Supra – though the Supra name may not be the one ultimately selected for the car. It will, however, retain the hybrid power of the concept car, though precisely what type of hybrid is still to be finalized. There are several types of hybrids, differing in the extent to which they use electric power to actually turn the wheels at all times. The concept car put 400 hp to the ground through the rear wheels and used a hybrid set-up in conjunction with a V-6 engine.
